Community Sport

Wells hosted this year’s primary school PE conference supporting Jason Hedaux, the School Games Organiser from Somerset Sport Activities Partnership (SASP). Primary school teachers from the Mendip area and beyond discussed the advantages of putting children at the heart of teaching and learning processes through the structure of ‘Real PE’. Much of the delivery resonated with the current drive at Wells junior school to ensure that all our pupils enjoy their PE and that it is delivered at the right level to address their long term needs. In the afternoon, Graham Norris, director of community sports, delivered a second workshop which developed the fundamental movement skills theme. In addition to looking on the essential skills that underpin running, jumping and throwing, teachers examined how to break down the movement into smaller accessible chunks to ensure that children gain early confidence in their own abilities. The school also took the lead role in organising and delivering the Mendip Area Sportshall Championships during the half term break, attended by 140 pupils from Catcott, Brookside, Hugh Sexey, Walton, Oakfield, Selwood and West Pennard primary schools. Two hours of loud, exciting and frantic competition saw the boys and girls from Hugh Sexey emerge as winners by just two points. The feedback after the event recognised the enthusiasm and professionalism of the Wells student leaders who worked very hard to ensure all the events were completed on time. Many thanks to student leaders Archie, Toby, Bruce, Oliver, Rafael, Samuel, Quentin and Adele for their help in ensuring such an energetic event.
