Principal Horn Trial at SCO

Congratulations to Old Wellensian, Zoë, who is currently on trial as Principal Horn of the internationally celebrated Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO).

Zoë, who was Head Girl at Wells in her final year in 2017, is currently in her second year studying French Horn at The Royal Academy in London. She returned to Wells over the weekend to take part in the Fire and Water concert collaboration in Cedars Hall between members of the Royal Academy of Music and Wells Brass and Percussion musicians, which was led by Mark David, ex-Principal Trumpet of the Philharmonia Orchestra and now Artistic Director and Head of Brass at the Royal Academy.

The stunning concert included virtuosic arrangements of Stravinsky’s ‘Firebird’, Handel’s ‘Water Music’ and Music from ‘The Royal Fireworks’.

Of her audition with the SCO, in which she played the natural horn, to which she was first introduced at Wells, Zoë said, “The early grounding at Wells Cathedral School in historically informed performance techniques paid off!”

The internationally celebrated Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO) is made up of a unique collection of talented musicians who inspire and connect with audiences through their extensive touring programme around the world.
