Wind Ensemble Tour to Berlin

The Wind Ensemble visited Berlin in the final week of term, with Wells musicians enjoying sightseeing tours and a German history lesson, as well as a packed musical schedule.

The group visited the CPE Bach Musikgymnasium, cementing the School’s relationship with the ‘Young Music Talents in Europe’ group. They performed a programme of Francaix, Orff, Reicha and John Williams alongside German soloists and ensembles, following rehearsals with their Head of Wind, Norbert Muller.

A further day was spent at the Rheingau Gymnasium, working with the school orchestra and giving a workshop on improvisation; the day culminated in a successful concert.

On the final day, the musicians watched the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra rehearse Mahler 1 in the morning, meeting up with french horn player Sarah Willis, who took them on stage and showed them around the Philharmonie. This was followed by a meeting with conductor Daniel Harding, who met the group backstage for a photo opportunity and chat after the concert in the evening.

Wells Head of Woodwind, Ed Leaker said, “Wells musicians excelled themselves with their professionalism and musicality. It was a wonderful tour!”
