French Horn Day

Sunday 12th November 2017, 11.00am - 5.30pm


Our French Horn Day is open to all levels of players and teachers. You can enjoy a fabulous day of horn playing at Wells Cathedral School with specialist horn tutor Simon de Souza and two of his most successful former students. The workshop will take place in our new state-of-the-art concert venue, Cedars Hall and the day will include:

  • Masterclasses
  • Recitals by the tutoring team
  • Workshops and coached ensembles to develop your horn playing whilst having fun!
  • Trade stand by horn specialists Paxman, with instruments and accessories to try and buy.

Refreshments will be provided throughout the day, but please bring a packed lunch.

About The Tutoring Team

Simon de Souza

Simon studied with the great virtuoso Ifor James before embarking on a career as a performer and teacher. He performs with the quintet, Chaconne Brass, formed in 1984, with a reputation as one of Britain’s most versatile ensembles.

He also freelances with orchestras and in the West End. Simon has had a successful career as a specialist teacher at Wells Cathedral School, Birmingham Conservatoire, Junior Royal Academy of Music and the Purcell School, whilst also coaching the country’s most prominent youth ensembles.

David Oxley, Horn
David Oxley

David studied at Wells Cathedral School and the Royal College of Music before building a career as a performer in West End musical theatre shows such as Miss Saigon. He has played with the legendary Dame Shirley Bassey, with bands such as McFly and many other great jazz performers, as well as regular freelance orchestral work. He is also passionate about education and is the horn teacher at London Oratory School where he runs various brass ensembles.

Tim Thorpe, Horn Specialist
Tim Thorpe

Tim studied at the Purcell School and the Guildhall before gaining his first orchestral position in the Philharmonia Orchestra in 2004. In 2006 he was appointed Principal Horn of The BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He is now gaining a reputation as one of the most accomplished horn players of his generation and alongside his work with BBC NOW appears as a guest principal and concerto soloist with many of the country’s finest ensembles. He is Professor of Horn at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
