International Composition Summer School

Sunday 1st August – Saturday 7th August 2021

This course is recommended for young composers aged between 12 and 18 who have some experience of composing music and wish to develop their skills and experience further, and compose a new piece in a week!

Musical Opportunities

During this week, you will have the opportunity to compose a piece of music for a small group of resident instrumentalists to perform. You will receive tuition in composition through group sessions and individual lessons, and you will learn about composing for instruments through workshops with the players, who will try out your ideas with you and rehearse the music that you write. Your piece will be performed at the end of course concert that is open to family and friends.

You should have had some experience of composing music already, and you will need to be able to notate your ideas fluently and reliably. There are no restraints of the style of music that you can compose during the week, but an open mind and willingness to try out new things will help to get the creative juices flowing!

Other Activities

Even professional musicians need a break from their instruments! With Wells Cathedral School’s outstanding facilities, you’ll have a range of activities to enjoy when you’re not making music…

Meet Our World-Class Staff

Course tutors will generally be either full- or part-time teaching staff of Wells Cathedral School, a government-recognised specialist music school that is known for its quality teaching and musical opportunities for pre-professional musicians. However, should our staff be unavailable for our composition summer school, we will appoint music teachers of a comparable calibre to teach courses.
