Military Music Summer School

28th July - 1st August 2020

Our Military Music Summer School aims to broaden musicians’ understanding of a career in the military by offering an insight into Military Musicians’ typical activities and required skills, alongside world-class music tuition.

This course is open to musicians aged 14-18.

This course is being run in conjunction with the Royal Marines School of Music.

What We Offer

The course will consist of:

  • Expectation and audition preparation for the world stage
  • A commitment to excellence and discipline
  • Physical training
  • An introduction to marching band
  • Concert band rehearsals
  • Masterclasses with leading instrumental professors
  • Green Day (a day of team tasks, leadership tasks and an introduction to basic field-craft)
  • An end of course concert for family and friends.

Meet Our Staff

Musicians from the Royal Marines School of Music will be resident throughout the week to mentor and support the young military musicians.

Major Huw Williams, Director of Music for the Plymouth band will be conductor in residence.

Captain Stuart Elks (RM) is the School’s Director of Outdoor Learning and will be running military field skills as well as adventures training.

A Typical Day

7.30am: Wake up call for boarders
8.00am: Breakfast
8.30am: Registration in Cedars Hall for both day and boarding pupils 
9.00am: Warmup
9.15am: Masterclass with Military Musicians
10.30am: Break
11.00am: Masterclass with Military Musicians
12.00pm: CCF Activities
1.00pm: Lunch

1.45pm: Masterclass with Military Musicians
2.45pm: CCF Activities
4.15pm: Refreshments
4.30pm: Woodwind/Brass/Percussion classes with tutors
6.00pm: Supper
6.45pm: Full wind orchestra
7.45pm: Day pupils depart
8.00pm: Boarders activities
9.30pm: Bedtime routine begins (age dependent)


The course costs £495 boarding and £395 day. The course includes meals (lunch and dinner for day). 

Please note that a non-refundable deposit of 25% of the course fee is required to reserve your place, with the balance due on 1st May 2020. Bookings made after the 1st May 2020 must be accompanied by the full fee for the course.
