Oboe and Bassoon Extravaganza!

Sunday 8th October 2023, 10.30am-5.00pm, Concert at 5.30pm

Open to all musicians under 18 years, of all musical abilities

Admission £40 (a limited number of bursaries are available)

Join us for an exciting, fun day of ensemble playing, masterclasses and more, culminating in a concert featuring THE WORLD PREMIERE of a new composition by Teresa Barlow. Every participant will play in this exciting new piece!

About our Oboe and Bassoon Extravaganza!

Enjoy an inspirational day of playing with some of the UK’s top teachers and performers in our state-of-the-art performance venue, Cedars Hall. We will be joined by double reed students from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. The day will include:

  • Workshops and coached ensembles to develop your playing
  • Solo performance masterclasses
  • An informal concert at the end of the day featuring every participant in a world premiere alongside ensembles from Wells, RWCMD and a special tutors ensemble
  • Music Conservatoire audition advice and top tips
  • The opportunity to try and buy instruments, music and accessories from trade stands with John Packer, Wonderful Winds and Jane Finch Music.

Bursaries

If the £40 fee is a barrier to being able to attend, we’d like to invite you to apply for one of our bursaries worth 50% off the fee (limited availability).     Liz Fyfe, previously a member of the ROH Orchestra Covent Garden, is the oboe tutor at Wells Cathedral School. Also an NCO tutor, Liz loves working with oboists of all stages and is always looking for new ways to enthuse

    Peter Harrison - Bassoon
    Pete Harrison

    Pete Harrison is the bassoon tutor at Wells Cathedral School alongside a busy schedule as guest conductor for orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

    Ashby Mayes
    Ashby Mayes

    Ashby Mayes is a multi award-winning bassoonist who studied at Wells, The Royal College of Music and The Hochschule für Musik Mannheim. Ashby tutors and performs all over Europe and runs his own successful publishing company.

    Poppy Webb-Taylor
    Poppy Webb-Taylor

    Poppy Webb-Taylor is an outstanding young oboist and educator working all over the UK and beyond. Poppy studied at Wells and is currently working on her Masters Degree at The Royal College of Music.

    Ella York
    Ella York

    Ella York established her oboe playing at Wells and then later as a student at The Royal College of Music. She is now studying for her master’s degree at the Sibelius Academy and regularly performs with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
