Sheku Kanneh-Mason Visits Wells
Cellist and BBC Young Musician of the Year Winner 2016, Sheku Kanneh-Mason performed a version of the Dvorak Cello Concerto especially arranged for reduced forces in the Cathedral on 16th September, with the Fantasia Orchestra and the conductor Tom Fetherstonhaugh.
The musicians rehearsed on the evening of the 15th, and members of the Wells Cathedral School Strings Department were invited to attend this rehearsal.
Accompanied by a number of Graduate Music Assistants and Wells Co-ordinator of Strings, Simon Smith, 25 pupils were privileged to watch an hour and a half of rehearsing, followed by a 20 minute question and answer session with Sheku.
The pupils quizzed him on a wide range of topics – from why he took up the cello (answer: to play something bigger than his elder brother’s violin!), to his favourite performance music (answer: Haydn String Quartets). It was a memorable occasion for all concerned.
