Our sports ethos is to foster a lifelong love of sport and physical activity in every pupil, inspire them to embrace a healthy lifestyle that challenges them as an individual and as an effective team member throughout their journey at Wells.
Through specialist coaching that emphasises fundamental movement skills, we nurture each and every pupil to maximise their potential and provide them a clear pathway through a range of enjoyable physical activities and games.
As pupils progress through Prep School, sport becomes increasingly focused on developing confident, resilient and adaptable young people through high-quality teaching and coaching as part of our PE and Games programmes. Pupils learn through weekly PE lessons and Games sessions which aim to develop fundamental movement skills, functional sports skills and effective tactics, strategies and problem solving.
PE Lessons incorporate skill rehearsal and conditioned games to refine technical ability and shape understanding, while building balance, co-ordination, agility, speed and aerobic endurance. Children are encouraged to participate in a wide range of sporting activities to allow them to fully explore their athletic potential, become positive role models and understand that both success and failure are valuable opportunities for growth.
Pupils have access to a wide range of sports clubs that encourage participation, skill development and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. Whether representing the school in competitive team sports such as rugby, football, hockey, netball and cricket, or developing individual skills in tennis, pickleball, climbing, gymnastics, swim squad, there is something to suit every interest and ability.
Pupils can also take part in the Rookie Lifeguard programme, where they build essential water safety, rescue and lifesaving skills in a fun and engaging environment delivered by our Head of Swimming.
These clubs provide opportunities for children to stay active, develop confidence, work as part of a team and challenge themselves both physically and mentally beyond the curriculum.
The organisation of a regular and appropriate fixtures programme is important to us. Pupils compete in matches with other schools from Year 3 onwards. Our programme provides opportunities for pupils to learn through competitive sport with continuous positive encouragement at the appropriate level for them.
In addition to our matches in hockey, rugby, football, netball and cricket, we also compete in the local athletics and cross country events, with many of our runners going on to represent Mendip in the inter-area championships. Other pupils also represent the school in swimming and tennis.
See our Sports website for our forthcoming fixtures and recent results.
