OUR PRIVATE NURSERY IN WELLS

We provide quality childcare and education in our private preschool for children aged 2-5. Little Wellies preschool nursery is open for 50 weeks of the year from 8.00am - 6.00pm with a range of sessions so you can find times to suit your needs. We recommend you contact us well before you wish your child to start to ensure we have availability.

Our Preschool Experience

Our private nursery experience is designed to bring out the best in every child. Our motto be what you are reflects the whole school ethos, with children encouraged to develop in a way that suits their own individual interests and skills.

Children aged 2-3 join our ‘Duckling’ class, which nurtures the first steps in their developmental journey with us. During the academic year that the children turn 4 years old, they advance into our ‘Cygnet’ class, which prepares them for ‘Big School’ by gradually immersing them in a play-based classroom environment with a subtle introduction to phonics and numbers alongside creative and physical activities.

Our range of music, drama, movement and play activities inspires children to grow emotionally, socially and intellectually. Your child will leave our private nursery confident, independent and resilient, motivated to take on the next challenges in their developmental journey.

We have limited availability through 2024-2025; please call us on 01749 834236 or use the form below to check our availability.

Wells Preschool in Somerset

At Little Wellies private nursery, we believe in developing the unique character in each child. Learning is about much more than literacy and numeracy. It is also about creativity, friendships and understanding the world, which is why we put play at the heart of everything we do, nurturing their critical thinking skills and their curiosity as they explore the enriching environment. Through play we can support children to build their confidence and independence and empower them to choose, imagine and empathise with other children.

Our free-flow environments are designed around the needs of our children, acknowledge what we know about child development and constantly change and evolve to suit their needs. This allows the children to develop ‘real-life’ skills and provides a calm and comforting space for creativity to thrive. Our skilled team of practitioners provides a stimulating range of open-ended play-based activities, indoors and out, that support and focus on child-led learning and exploration. These inspiring opportunities and activities both encourage and enable the children to be curious and follow their own path. Our aim is that children can be fully engaged and enveloped in their play, developing their own lines of enquiry along the way – our skilled, flexible and creative practitioners are always ready to ‘plan in the moment’ to capture every curious spark!

In order to give you an insight into your child’s experience at our preschool nursery, we use an online system called Tapestry to record your child’s time with us. By logging on with a secure username and password, you will see videos and photo observations of your child’s learning and development. You can share it and post any comments and photographs of your own, helping to create a fully holistic view of your child.

Nursery Life at Wells Private Preschool

Room to Grow

Our extensive nursery facilities are thoughtfully designed to encourage your child’s creativity, development and natural passion for learning. We have distinct learning areas: a home corner, a reading space, an area for creative activities such as sand and water play, and a large carpeted area for construction play.

Outside, we have a self-contained play area with grass and hard play safety surfaces so your child can explore the outdoors, enjoying climbing, balancing, ride-on toys and more, all within a safe environment where we encourage appropriate levels of risk-taking to expand their comfort zone. Children enjoy our themed days, such as Welly Wednesday and Fitness Friday. Activities are child-centred and often child-initiated facilitated by our enabling environment, allowing our children to be resourceful and imaginative in choosing their play.

Our independent nursery school is located in the heart of Wells Cathedral School, allowing us to take advantage of the full range of facilities, including the sports and drama halls, music rooms, dining hall, nature area within the beautiful school grounds, and additional play facilities.

Specialist teaching and opportunities

Alongside our child-led environment, we have a team of specialist teachers who work with many of our age groups in Wells Cathedral School to inspire the children in Dance, Drama, Forest School, Sport and Music!

Wells wouldn’t be Wells without Music, and you’ll find that is true for even our youngest pupils! We bring music, song and laughter to Little Wellies in the form of our engaging lessons which immerse the children in music from a young age. Children are like sponges; they start music theory, in a play-based way, alongside many practical activities and singing, too. Being immersed in games that practise rhythm, dynamic, tempo, volume and having the opportunity to use a range of percussion allow for an excellent musical start in life, laying the foundations for the future.

Music returns to Little Wellies during our Dance lessons! The children love to move and groove, exploring a variety of dances, focusing on developing their gross motor control and coordination as well as focusing on prerequisites of the ISTD Modern Theatre Dance syllabus. This continues into our Pre-Prep, where our children continue their Dance education as part of our creative curriculum.

Claire Stone, one of our Early Years Educators, is our Forest School expert. The children enjoy outdoor adventures in our beautiful environments where they learn risk-taking in a safe and controlled environment. With everything from fire safety to using tools, to exploring the wider world on nature walks, and making, creating and interacting with nature, our ‘Little Wellies’ can’t help but love Welly Wednesdays! We also believe that by nurturing a love of nature at this young age, our pupils begin to see the awe and wonder in nature and thus both value and want to protect our precious planet.

Our Prep School sports teachers, Steve Bratt and Laura Bain, get the children moving with an engaging Games and Fitness session where the children enjoy developing useful gross fundamental movement skills, from jumping, hopping, running, throwing and catching, and much more! Our Games teachers have a gift of making these skills based activities so fun and imaginative, whilst setting the foundations for a lifelong love of movement and fostering an active and healthy lifestyle! Our children also move and groove with some of our specialist sports team who bring music and physical activity hand in hand during Move it Monday and Fitness Friday!

Last but not least, our Drama lessons bring stories to life and focus on raising confidence and developing prerequisite Literacy and Language skills, giving our children the tools they need to take on the world!

Nursery Meals & Snacks

We recognise that toddlers need good nutritious food to give them the energy they need to learn and play throughout the day! We provide healthy & varied meals and snacks with each of our sessions so you don’t need to worry about factoring in food as part of your hectic day.

Depending on your choice of sessions, your child can enjoy breakfast, a morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack and a light tea with us. Preschool meals are served in the school dining room, which is an ideal opportunity for them to learn the culinary skills they need for lunches at School.
