Brass - Jazz Day

Sixth Form Jazz Day

The Wells Academic Music and Jazz departments teamed up last week to deliver a full Sixth Form Study Day covering all of the jazz elements of the A level syllabus.

Sessions covered areas such as jazz history, instrumental techniques, form and harmony, with a rousing improvisation class for all-comers at the end of the day.

Speakers included Wells’ own Head of Academic Music, Harvey Brink, Jazz Department Coordinator Edward Leaker, Jazz Trumpet Tutor Nick Malcolm and Percussionist Andy Tween.

We were also thrilled to welcome special guest speaker Mark Armstrong via pre-recorded video lectures. Mark is Head of Jazz at the Royal College of Music and Artistic Director of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.

He will be visiting the school in the New Year to follow up on the study day and to work with our talented jazz players. The Wells Jazz Orchestra and Senior Jazz Combo gave demonstrations throughout the day and finished with a concert and socially distanced jam session.
