Wells Cathedral School celebrates the Coronation
We’re celebrating the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Queen Camilla through a range of activities over the coming weeks.
Head Master Alastair Tighe has issued the following statement on behalf of the School:
“As a School, we are absolutely thrilled to be celebrating the coronation of King Charles III – our Royal Patron for many years – and Queen Camilla. The King has visited Wells on a number of occasions, including notably to plant “The King’s Tree”, the glorious Blue Atlas Cedar that flourishes on the School’s lawn. He has demonstrated on innumerable occasions his commitment to and passion for education, music and the environment – all of which we share. We wish King Charles and Queen Camilla a long and glorious reign!”
On Wednesday, Head Master Alastair Tighe was honoured to represent the School at a Coronation Garden Party hosted by His Majesty King Charles III at Buckingham Palace. Queen Camilla was also in attendance, as well as TRH The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the latter of whom is Patron of the Wells Cathedral School Chorister Trust.
Back at the School, Coronation events have included:
– A special Prep School Assembly led by Jody Wells, in which pupils were taught all about what to expect on the day. With the help of five volunteers, Mr Wells even enacted each stage of the ceremony!
– Pre-Prep and Prep School pupils taking part in The Big Help Out: older pupils were litter-picking across the School and the city of Wells, while the Pre-Prep painted pebbles and placed them in the grounds of The Bishop’s Palace.
– Monday’s Senior School Cathedral address considered the very real possibility that the core elements of Saturday’s Coronation Service were devised by Dunstan in AD 973 who may well have been one of the first pupils educated at Wells Cathedral School.
– Pupils in Years 7-9 created a fantastic and greatly varied range of Coronation logos during their Art lessons this week.
– A special “Coronation menu” in the dining hall for the week, including meals such as Coronation Chicken, Coronation Quiche, and of course, fish and chips!
– Bunting and decorations across the School.
We have also been celebrating the achievements of a number of Old Wellensians this week, including:
– Alice Candlin and Amy Law, whose GCSE and A level final pieces have been featured in the ‘Art in the Cathedral Cloisters’ exhibition at Wells Cathedral from 2nd-12th May, part of the King’s Coronation Celebrations in Wells.
– James Manning, whose photographs of the Coronation dress rehearsal have been featured on the BBC News website.
– James Buckall and Zoe Tweed, who will be performing at the Coronation service in Westminster Abbey.
Our celebrations will continue after the King has been crowned, culminating in a special Coronation service in Wells Cathedral on Monday 15th May.
