Sixth Form trip to Westminster
On Monday 26th February, a select group of Lower and Upper Sixth Form pupils travelled to London to visit the Palace of Westminster and then the Supreme Court building.
They were able to follow the route of the Sovereign during the State opening of Parliament and visit the floors of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords (and it is quite rare to be able to do both!). The pupils then took part in a workshop that followed the process of making a law and Parliamentary debating procedure, having a mock debate on the notion of re-introducing the death penalty. During lunch there was time for some exploration of Westminster before a photo in front of the Elizabeth Tower. In the afternoon, the pupils visited all three courts in the Supreme Court building and explored with the information officer the history and role of the court, in addition to the nuances of a case the Justices had previously considered.
A long but very interesting day!
