Opera Scenes
Only at Wells – Opera Scenes!
Hot on the heels of the astonishing String Showcase and excellent, vibrant Jazz Picnic, Mr Finch and his company of acting singers and singing actors produced a wonderful concert of Purcell, one of England’s finest composers.
In the first half, the chamber choir delighted the audience with some of Purcell’s best known anthems. Hearing solos from within the choir, especially from the younger voices, demonstrated what good shape our Vocal Department is in for the future. The second half was a performance of Dido and Aeneas, one of the first English operas.
Congratulations to the whole cast including a gaggle of witches and a rowdy and gymnastic company of sailors. Particular congratulations must go to Lydia (Dido, Upper Sixth) and Tom (Aeneas, Lower Sixth) on their poise and quality – both were outstanding. The small orchestra were excellent and it was fabulous to hear some truly stylish Baroque string playing. Many thanks to all the staff and crew who made all of this possible. Hats off in particular to Mr Finch and Ms Donovan, who year after year create such an excellent production.
Our thanks to Kamin (Upper Sixth) for her fantastic photos of the event.
