Year 4 Saxon topic
During the Advent Term, Year 4 travelled back in time to Saxon Britain!
The children enjoyed three weeks of cross-curricular work which included letter writing in the role of King Vortigern to Saxons, Hengest and Hors, chronology work to create a timeline of key events in the Saxon era, shared reading and writing of the Saxon story ‘Beowulf’ and using the Digimaps software to create annotated maps of local Saxon settlement names.

They also had a fantastic trip to the Somerset Rural Life Museum where they took part in the ‘Saxon Somerset’ workshop. After reenacting the famous Battle of Edington between the Vikings and the Saxons, pupils created their own rune stones and built Saxon ‘burghs’, then tested them to see if they would have survived a Viking attack!
To finish the topic, pupils enjoyed a Saxon day where they showed the learning powers of resilience, motivation and resourcefulness, and the CARE values of creativity and endeavour to complete the following activities: weaving with wool which they dyed with red cabbage, turmeric and beetroot, decorating a keepsake box with their own ‘illuminated letters’, baking oatcakes following an authentic recipe from the Saxon era – and the day finished with a feast which was fit for a Saxon king!
