Steven Isserlis masterclass
Following his sensational concert in Cedars Hall, Steven Isserlis returned to the Eavis Auditorium to give a truly inspiring masterclass to four cellists: Juna B (Year 10), Jesus GM (Year 11), Harry H and Nicolas T (Lower Sixth), who performed works by Schumann, Elgar, Bach and Shostakovich. Steven was at his entertaining and inspiring best, instructing pupils to, “tell a story!” and to not, “worry about every note – don’t turn into a cellist”. At one point he challenged a pupil for looking down: “you are the hero in this piece – heroes don’t look at the ground.” Shostakovich features evil machines, apparently, but, “have you ever seen an evil machine that rushes?”. It was a wonderful start to the educational side of the Maestro Series.
