German workshop WCS Wells Cathedral School Independent Prep Somerset England

German workshop

Pupils in Years 8, 9 and 10 currently studying German attended a German workshop delivered by an external company called Futbol Lingo.

Pupils first listened to a motivational talk about the importance of foreign languages in the football industry and gained an insight into the range of career options available in this field, where language skills would be invaluable, such as coaching, sports journalism, scouting, sports medicine, intermediary and more. This was followed by a classroom session in German where pupils, divided in groups, each represented a different country and had to present why their country was the best. The workshop ended with a practical football session, incorporating keywords and phrases in German; pupils had to say something every time they passed the ball.

Mrs Alabiso, who organised the workshop, commented: “It was great to give pupils the possibility to see how many job opportunities they can have simply by mastering one or more foreign languages, particularly in football beyond the pitch.”

Ms Desmarchelier, Director of Languages, added that: “Events like this are important not only to educate but also motivate, instilling the importance of the different skills needed as a gateway to global opportunities outside the classroom.”
