Armonico Consort
Our Chamber Choir had the immense privilege of singing alongside the acclaimed professional choir the Armonico Consort in uniquely immersive choral concerts of ‘Supersize Polyphony’ at the Lighthouse Poole and Wells Cathedral.
Led by the Armonico’s inspirational director Christopher Monks, the combined forces performed some of the most epic and large-scale choral music spread throughout the building, producing for the audience a medieval version of Dolby surround sound! Our incredible singers conquered the most intricate and exposed vocal writing, including the incredible 40-part motet ‘Spem in Alium’. The concerts also featured a world premier of a stunningly powerful and poignant new work for massed choirs by revered OW composer David Buckley (1994), which also showcased our fabulous Cathedral Choristers and the Cathedral Oratorio Society in the Wells performance. Greeted with a rapturous reception by the audience, the concerts were a supersize success.
It was wonderful to receive a glowing message from Christopher Monks, Armonico’s Artistic Director, after the performance: “Both I and the full houses at both Wells Cathedral and Poole Lighthouse were simply blown away by the brilliance of your young singers. They were put under real pressure to produce a professional performance in front of two large audiences paying full price, expecting professional standards, and they were not disappointed. Your pupils stood as one, as a team alongside the professionals and held their own. I don’t know of a school in the UK who has pupils able to do that, especially under the pressure of the performance…they should all be exceptionally proud of themselves, and the School too. They were simply awesome.”
