VE Day
On Thursday 8th May, we celebrated the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, known as VE Day. The day marks the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces, ceasing military operations and bringing peace to Europe.
On Tuesday 6th May Prep School pupils took part in workshops to learn about VE Day through topics such as what people wore, where people went to celebrate, how people travelled to the celebrations, what people ate, how Buckingham Palace was part of the celebrations, who was born around VE Day and what hopes people had. The children were challenged to create a tableaux depicting various scenes throughout the day.
On VE Day itself, our wonderful Catering team served a delicious themed menu, while our CCF participated in the Lighting of the Beacon on the Cathedral Green with Chescy H (Upper Sixth) performing The Last Post and joining the Wells City Band. Additionally, Lenny C-N and Shanna F performed for a local community concert as part of VE Day celebrations in Rodney Stoke village. Concert-goers enormously appreciated Lenny and Shanna’s performance, which included highlights from film music as well as classic repertoire to celebrate VE Day. It was a wonderful evening of community music-making and celebration was certainly in the air everywhere, with our Prep children cheering for joy when their afternoon play time was extended!
