University of Southampton Maths Challenge WCS Wells Cathedral School Independent Prep Somerset England

University of Southampton Maths Challenge

Pupils in Years 7 to 10 were invited to take part in this year’s University of Southampton Maths Challenge.

A series of problems with a sweet treat theme were posed to pupils and they were tasked with not only solving them but also writing out full solutions to each one, explaining how they had arrived at their answers. Most of the work on this took place outside of the classroom in pupils’ own time. Across the country over 1000 pupils have taken part in this year’s competition and we were delighted to submit solutions from 20 pupils this year.

It is with great pride and pleasure that we announce in the Senior (Years 9 and 10) competition Zino Z was awarded first place and Michael D (Year 9) was awarded a certificate of Merit, whilst in the Junior (Years 7 and 8) competition Shanna F and Ryan H (Year 8) were awarded certificates of Distinction.

All prize winners have been invited to the university for a presentation evening on Wednesday 4th June and we are extremely proud of them.
