Old Wellensian Rising Stars
It was a treat to welcome back Fergus McCready (2018, oboe) and Bridget Yee (2022, piano) to perform in our OW Rising Stars concert. Fergus, who has recently been appointed Principal Oboe of the Royal Opera House is less of a Rising Star and more of an “already a star”. He performed a sparkling recital including Telemann and Kalliwoda, accompanied by Dominic Hansom (who he performed the same repertoire with over eight years ago) and all this after spending time working with our own oboists and those from the local Stoberry Park Primary School. Bridget performed Beethoven and Rachmaninoff superbly on the piano she remembers and loves from her time here at Wells. The audience was hugely appreciative, the atmosphere friendly and the camaraderie throughout was infectious. Thank you to the Wellensian Association for enabling this concert to happen.
Fergus joined us for some inspirational classes before his evening concert, working with our oboists in solo and ensemble classes and delivering an insightful workshop about choosing an instrument with the help of Ian Crowther from ‘The Oboe Shop’. We were joined by pupils from Stoberry who have been learning to play the oboe with Wells tutor Liz Fyfe as part of a partnership between our two Schools.
