Prep School Creative Arts Week
Creative Arts Week launched with a lively assembly and the creation of special passports, setting the tone for a week-long global journey through art, music and performance.
In Africa, pupils from Reception to Year 6 experienced the rhythmic excitement of djembe drumming with guest Oumar. Art workshops inspired by Benin, Senegal and Egypt saw pupils crafting African masks and Canopic jars. Asia brought vibrant colours and flavours, from Chinese lanterns and Japanese sushi-making to energetic Bollywood dance sessions in Ritchie Hall. Year 6 explored Indian art through Mendhi patterns, fine line drawings and batik creations. In Australia, Year 3 explored Aboriginal art while Years 5 and 6 studied Maori symbolism, with Mr Gibson introducing the Prep School to the Haka. European adventures included Italian mosaics, a Roman villa trip for Year 3, an IT exploration of Gaudi’s Spanish architecture, Eiffel Tower construction challenges and captivating tales from Denmark and Germany. The Brazilian carnival came to Cedars Hall as Years 4 and 5 joined Samba percussion workshops with our Senior School percussionists. Meanwhile, North America featured cheerleading with Miss Cannon and spirited rehearsals for the Prep School’s upcoming Newsies production.
Even our youngest pupils joined in, travelling the world through music—from the call and response African song Che Che Kule sung by our Little Wellies to Alouette, sung in French by Reception. The Australian Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree provided opportunities for Pre-Prep to sing as a round and the wealth of world music instruments proved a voyage of discovery for our Little Wellies children in their weekly music sessions.
Everyone has enjoyed an extraordinary week of adventure, creativity and discovery and the half Term break will certainly provide a welcome opportunity to recover from the jet lag after all that globetrotting! Thank you to all the staff and external visitors who have contributed to this incredible week with so many wonderful memories made along the way.
