Conference for Sixth Form linguists WCS Wells Cathedral School Independent Prep Somerset England

Conference for Sixth Form linguists

On Wednesday 8th October, all Lower and Upper Sixth linguists attended a virtual linguistics conference organised by Oxford High School.

For three hours, pupils listened to four great and varied talks followed by Q&A, delivered by four university professors. The talks started with a look at the use of AI in languages and how it could harness the possibility of providing one-to-one speaking practice especially for pupils outside of the classroom by Professor Wonnacott of the University of Oxford; it was followed by a look at idioms by Dr Carrol of the University of Birmingham; after a break pupils learnt about forensic linguistics with Dr Grant of Aston University who took pupils through an actual case study before finishing the morning with a session by Dr Nelson of the University of Leeds on the revival of ‘extinct’ languages. It was very informative and an eye opener for some pupils who were intrigued with the possibilities of linguistics.

It was a great morning showcasing the possibilities offered by learning a foreign languages outside of the classroom and outside of teaching,” commented Director of Languages Ms Desmarchelier.
