Mendip League X Country

Mr Bratt writes the following account of the Mendip League X Country race:

The second and wettest ever experienced Mendip League X Country race took place over at Downside on Tuesday. The rain started as we boarded the bus in Woodlands Yard and the feeling of trepidation engulfed the squad as they wound their way through the Somerset countryside. If it hadn’t been for the ‘Old Skool Anthems’ played through DJ Hunt’s brand new speaker, I think we would have turned the bus round!

There were some outstanding performances from everyone. The Year 3/4 girls set the stage with an outstanding team effort, particularly up the steep hill towards the finish. They had the benefit of running on a less ‘churned up’ course compared to the quagmire experienced underfoot by the Year 5/6 Girls and Boys a little later.

We had two top ten places in the Year 3/4 girls: both second and fourth. In the Year 3/4 Boys’ race there was also a fifth place despite a slippery ‘handbreak turn’ on the home straight.

The Year 5 and 6 runners started their races close to sunset due to a ‘clog up’ in the finishing funnel as the younger runners presented their soggy and half disintegrated position ‘tickets’ to the finishing marshalls. The added lap on top of the Year 3/4 course was not met with it’s usual enthusiasm as the clouds produced another unwelcome torrent of rain! Our cross country captain made it into the top ten despite the hardships, achieving fourth place for the second time this season. All the runners deserve ‘Tough Mudder’ awards, however, as it was a major achievement just to complete the race! Well done you superheroes!
