Battles for the House Speaking Trophy WCS Wells Cathedral School Independent Prep Somerset England

Battles for the House Speaking Trophy

Seven campaigns fought for one proud victory! Daisy M (Lower Sixth) writes the following account of our annual House Speaking Competition:

All of our Houses showed up to compete for the prestigious House speaking competition on Friday evening 28th November to mark the end of St Andrew’s Day. Battle lines were drawn at 7pm on the dot. No being late for this one.

The gauntlet was first thrown down by Edwards House who presented their lively speech focusing on whether or not Chat GPT can do parents’ evening. A brilliant effort indeed from Edwards questioner Winnie A (Year 11), which saw her promoted to best questioner of the evening. This was followed by an exciting volley of words by Ritchie House whose subject assertively argued that ‘Envy is the most destructive of the deadly sins!’. De Salis was strongly led by Freddy B (Lower Sixth) who considered, ‘Do we still need a king?’, and he was ably assisted by the effervescent Henry G (Year 8) who brought home the trophy for best chairperson.

Next to enter the arena was Claver Morris on the subject, ‘Should homework be banned?’. It proved to be a most convincing attack but I’m still getting homework so we need to work a bit more on Mr Ashton and Mrs Perry to action the proposed change!  After these strongly fought campaigns came Haversham House charging over the hill on the subject, ‘Are we being watched?’. The penultimate conflict was fought by Plumptre House with the topic of women’s education in Niger. They fought the battle valiantly with their commander and chief Lily C (Year 10) voted the best individual speaker of the night. The final tactical engagement came from Cedars House with Juri J (Lower Sixth)’s valiant discussion on the debate, ‘Can evolution and religion coexist?’. Again, a very meaty and thought-provoking subject that drew plenty of audience engagement.

Counter attacks came from all corners of the audience and tricky questions were well defended by the speakers from each House.

Final victory was given to Haversham House (Speaker: Daisy M (Lower Sixth), Chairperson: Clover B (Lower Sixth) and Questioner: Nimue W (Lower Sixth)) with a unanimous decision from the judging panel chaired by The Very Reverend Toby Wright, the Dean of Wells Cathedral and School Governor. Congratulations to everyone that took part. It was an excellent evening of entertainment and amazing speaking from all. Looking forward to it again next year!
