Roderick Williams masterclass
With the sun shining through the windows of Cedars Hall and the trees visible beyond, the setting itself felt calm, beautiful and inspiring. Into that atmosphere stepped one of the world’s great baritones, Roderick Williams, to lead a vocal masterclass of the very highest quality.
What was so striking was not simply the extraordinary depth of musical understanding on display, but the generosity and humility with which it was shared. Here was an artist held in the highest esteem, offering encouragement with warmth, humanity and ease, enabling young performers not only to sing better, but to communicate more deeply.
Of course there was technical advice, thoughtful and precise throughout, but so much of the session focused on connection and performance: connection with the audience, connection with fellow performers, and connection with oneself. Through gentle insight, humour and beautifully judged guidance, pupils were encouraged to relax into their performances, to trust themselves, and in doing so to produce singing and interpretation of remarkable honesty and beauty.
To witness young musicians growing in confidence in real time — supported so generously by a performer of such stature — felt a genuine privilege. The atmosphere in the hall was one of complete attentiveness and joy. An intimate audience of knowledgeable and appreciative listeners shared a couple of truly special hours in the presence of greatness.
It was a reminder of what music education can and should be at its very best: inspiring, humane, demanding, generous and profoundly alive.
