Wells marks Remembrance
We began Remembrance Sunday with members of the School’s Combined Cadet Force and our drumline (complete with bagpipes!) taking part in the City of Wells Remembrance commemoration and parade, representing the School with pride. In the afternoon, our Choristers joined the School’s Chamber Choir and other Wells musicians for a devotional performance of Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem in the Cathedral, with Laetitia H (Lower Sixth) playing a beautiful solo. The service concluded with the much-loved and poignant ‘poppy drop’, a moment that has become a cherished tradition of our Remembrance commemorations. Later that evening, we held a moving Remembrance service of our own in the Cathedral. The service was led by our School Chaplain Reverend Tom Handy, who preached to a congregation of pupils, staff, parents, and Old Wellensians. The Chapel Choir sang alongside readings of poems in English, German, and French, and the Old Wellensian Roll of Honour was read in tribute to former pupils who gave their lives in service.
Our trumpeters stepped out in force to sound The Last Post throughout the community. Hendrik B (Year 10) performed at both our boarders’ service and our Monday morning service, then on Armistice Day Eddie S (Year 11) stood on Cedars Lawn, Cole C (Year 11) in the Wells Market Place and Gloria A (Year 7) in our Prep School assembly. On Remembrance Sunday, Milo B (Lower Sixth) was heard in Wells Cathedral, Reuben A (Upper Sixth) in Doulting and the Bishops’ Palace, Poppy W (Lower Sixth) in Mells, Eddie S (Year 11) in Litton, Lenny C-N (Year 8) in Winterbourne Stickland, Ethan R (Upper Sixth) at St. Cuthbert’s Church & Harry Patch Memorial, Wells, and Gloria A (Year 7) in Meare. Additionally, Gloria featured in the Lady Mayor’s Show in London the day before with the Guildhall Young Artists. She was one of 50 wind, brass and percussionists forming the drum and bass marching band and with the rest being aged 13 to 18, she was the youngest musician there having just turned 12.
The Prep School also gathered together to mark Remembrance Day with a moving service. They read In Waters Deep, and Major Calum Davidson shared For the Fallen. Everyone joined in song to honour the occasion, while children across the Prep explored the day’s significance through lessons, crafts and reflection.
