Shakespeare in Love: “A Triumph!”
Over the past ten weeks, our pupils and staff have poured their hearts and boundless creativity into Wells Cathedral School’s unforgettable production of Shakespeare in Love. Performed within a full working replica of the 1600s Curtain Theatre, the show featured a pupil-composed and arranged score played live, a large ensemble cast who sang, danced, acted, and multi-rolled with tremendous flair, and—of course—the appearance of the cutest dog in the South West. Developed collaboratively in every rehearsal, with ideas contributed by the full pupil ensemble, the production became a true celebration of shared artistry. With sold-out performances throughout the run, including a joyful matinee for invited primary schools, audiences were treated to an evening rich in energy, imagination, and theatrical magic.
The impact of this collaboration was captured perfectly by one appreciative audience member who wrote: “A triumph! Please may I add my heartfelt appreciation for the outstanding production you and your team created last night? WCS flagship shows are always superb and this one excelled in the huge range of skills brought flawlessly together—long scripts learned faultlessly, dramatic delivery & facial expression, authentic characterisation & accents, fun stage positioning & evolving action (including fight scenes), slick scene changes. Plus the music composition & performance and the choreography added the final triumphant on stage sparkles! And then of course there were the huge backstage organisational and logistics work.”
We are enormously proud of our pupils’ ambition, professionalism, and joy throughout this process—an inspiring testament to what can be achieved when a community creates something remarkable together. Following on from our award successes with West Side Story, we are also excited to reveal that our production has been nominated for Best Play and Best Ensemble (as well as some individual performer nominations) by the National School Theatre Awards, with the ceremony taking place in June next year.
