Year 7 theatre trip

Year 7 enjoyed a memorable trip to see the stage adaptation of My Neighbour Totoro at the Gillian Lynne Theatre, as part of their curriculum and ongoing exploration of theatre-making.

Directed by Phelim McDermott in association with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the production offered a masterclass in storytelling, design, and performance. The puppetry was mesmerising, from tiny soot sprites to larger forest spirits, demonstrating how inventive theatrical techniques can create real wonder on stage.

The fluid set and dreamlike staging, combined with the stunning music composed by Joe Hisaishi, with musicians placed in treehouse like structures beneath a star-lit, moonlit sky, created a richly immersive experience that deeply engaged our pupils.

Exploring universal themes of family, childhood, resilience, and the quiet magic of the natural world, the performance not only touched the heart but also provided meaningful inspiration for our pupils’ own creative work. It will undoubtedly influence their storytelling as they continue developing their theatre-making skills and begin to look ahead to next year’s school production.

Our Year 7 pupils were a credit to the School throughout and a joy to spend the day with, making it a wonderful, inspiring, and memorable experience for all.
