GCSE success as Wells Cathedral School pupils celebrate their achievements
Wells Cathedral School is delighted to announce another year of magnificent GCSE results, with pupils celebrating excellent individual achievements across a wide range of subjects.
These results are a testament to the hard work, commitment and determination of our pupils, alongside the guidance and support of their teachers, families and the wider Wells Cathedral School community.
Pupils have enjoyed success across the breadth of subjects offered at Wells, with particularly strong performances in the sciences, mathematics, music, drama and art. Half of all grades were awarded a grade 7 or above and nearly a quarter of our year group achieved grade 7s and above in all of their subjects. However, at Wells we are all about the individual achievements of all our pupils rather than simply focussing on the incredible results of our high fliers. It is here that we see our remarkable value-added results shine as highlighted by our recent ISI inspection report which commented on the fact that our GCSE results are consistently above national averages, particularly in the higher grades.
In addition to our Year 11 pupils receiving their results, ten Year 9 pupils also sat their GCSE Music examination, achieving exceptional results, with eight pupils awarded a grade 9 and two achieving a grade 8.
The results reflect the breadth of achievement across the year group, with pupils achieving highly in academic subjects alongside the creative arts, music, languages, sport and other areas of School life.
Among the individual successes was Uneysah, an international boarder from Mumbai, who joined us as a Specialist Musician on Piano, achieved all grade 9s. Uneysah has particularly enjoyed the opportunities available to her at Wells, especially those to develop her playing. She will continue her studies at Wells in the Sixth Form, where she plans to study Biology, Mathematics and Music.
There was a sense of excitement around the room when pupils arrived to speak with staff, with many sharing their excitement for moving through into the Sixth Form.
Ezra, a day pupil who is a Specialist Musician on Piano, said, “I am really pleased with my results, I worked hard and received the results and am excited to be moving into the Sixth Form.” Ezra will continue as a Specialist Musician in the Sixth Form and will be taking Music, French and Mathematics as his A level choices.
Emma G of Burrington, is keeping her options open to the subjects she would like to study. “Currently, I have chosen English, Mathematics and Further Mathematics. I am so happy with my results and I did well across the board that I may consider some alternative options. It’s not just about getting the best results though, I should choose subjects that I know I’ll enjoy.” Emma is one of our Mathematics Specialists, a pathway for gifted mathematicians offering enrichment and extension activities in mathematics, and is looking forward to further exploring this subject in the Sixth Form.
Thomas of Wells, has been at WCS since Year 1, is focused on a career in medicine, and has chosen his subjects based on his interests and what he needs for his next steps beyond Sixth Form. “I did brilliantly, I am so pleased that my hard work has paid off. I’ll be studying Biology, Chemistry and Geography in the Sixth Form.”
Alongside his studies Thomas, also a Mathematics Specialist, will continue with the outdoor education opportunities available to him such as the CCF and DofE.
New Headmaster, James Davies, commented:
“It has been an immense pleasure to be able to celebrate with the young people of Wells Cathedral School this morning. All the staff here at Wells are immensely proud of all their incredible achievements. These results represent far more than grades on a piece of paper; they reflect the hard work, perseverance, resilience and personal growth of each individual pupil. I am extremely excited now to be able to get to know them as I begin my Wells Cathedral School journey and to support them with their wonderfully ambitious goals for the future.
“Every pupil has their own story and their own achievements to celebrate, and it is particularly pleasing to see such a breadth of success across the year group. Whether pupils have achieved exceptional academic results, excelled in Music, Sport, Drama and the Arts, grappled with the many challenges of being a modern teenager or enjoyed significant progress during their time at the school, they should all be extremely proud of themselves.
“I am delighted to be able to welcome so many of our Year 11 pupils who due to their excellent outcomes will be continuing their education at Wells into our highly successful Sixth Form, alongside many new pupils who will be joining us from schools across the region and overseas. It is particularly exciting that, in my first year at Wells, we will be beginning this next chapter together. I look forward to seeing this new Sixth Form community develop, and to supporting every pupil as they pursue their individual interests, ambitions and aspirations. We are very lucky to have such talented staff to complement our wonderful pupils and together I am sure they will be able to produce another incredible set of A level results to rival those achieved last week by our outgoing Upper Sixth pupils.”
Lucy Balderson, Head of Year 11, added:
“It is wonderful to see our pupils celebrating today and to see their hard work rewarded. They have shown tremendous commitment throughout their GCSE studies, and we are particularly proud of the way they have supported one another and embraced the many opportunities available to them at Wells.
“GCSE results day is an important moment, but it is only one part of each pupil’s journey. What has been so rewarding is seeing this year group grow in confidence, independence and resilience during their time with us. We look forward to seeing those qualities continue to develop as they take their next steps, whether that is here at Wells or elsewhere.”
As our GCSE pupils prepare to take the next steps in their education, Wells Cathedral School congratulates every pupil on their individual achievements and wishes them every success as they embark on this exciting new chapter, both at Wells and beyond.
We would be delighted to welcome anyone interested in exploring the unique opportunities that we are able to offer as a school at our forthcoming Open Day on the morning of Saturday 19th September, when there will be an opportunity to hear from our current pupils and our new Headmaster about what life at Wells Cathedral School can offer.
