Session Orchestra Concert
We saw the first concert for our newly formed Wells Cathedral School Session Orchestra featuring pupils from the String, Jazz and Vocal Departments.
The first half of the concert was a tribute to the iconic “Charlie Parker with Strings” concerts of the 1950s and the second half featured vocalists performing classic songs as performed by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Michael Buble, using original arrangements as used by the studio musicians on the original recordings. The arrangements were kindly supplied by Callum Au and Colin Skinner.
Mr Leaker, Head of Woodwind and Jazz, said: “This was an ambitious project but it is important for today’s young musicians to be able to experience this wonderful music and to be able to work in a more commercial setting. The featured pupils gave us mature and authentic performances and the orchestra really rose to the challenge. Special thanks to staff and pupils for this cross departmental collaboration. We are very much looking forward to the next one.”
