Stage Lights and Star Insights: Drama pupils visit Theatre Royal Bath for stellar production and Q&A
Our Drama Department recently took 50 GCSE and A Level Drama pupils on an inspiring trip to Theatre Royal Bath to see Playhouse Creatures, a compelling play by April De Angelis. Set in the 1660s during the Restoration era, the play explores the lives of the first women allowed to perform on the English stage. Through the experiences of five pioneering actresses—Nell Gwyn, Mrs Marshall, Mrs Farley, Doll Common, and Mrs Betterton—the production delves into themes of ambition, societal expectations, and the challenges faced by women in the theatre industry.
The cast featured a stellar lineup which included Anna Chancelor and Katherine Kingsley. Directed by Michael Oakley, the production was lauded for its vibrant portrayal of these historical figures and the challenges they faced.
After the performance, our pupils had the exclusive opportunity to engage in a private discussion with the cast and director. This rare experience allowed them to delve deeper into the craft of theatre and gain invaluable insights into the professional world of acting and directing.
This trip was not just an outing but an enriching experience that brought the world of theatre to life for our pupils, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of the dramatic arts.
