Step 2. Visit the School

We warmly invite you to visit Wells Cathedral School and discover what makes our School so special. The best way to see if our School is the right choice for your family is to experience it firsthand. Join us for our next Open Day or arrange a personalised visit.

Step 3. Register

When you are ready to apply for a place at Wells Cathedral School the next step is to complete the Registration form. Please complete either our Registration Form for UK Applicants or our Registration Form for Overseas Applicants as relevant.

Scholarships and Specialist Music

Please note that our Scholarships and Specialist Music Programme have additional requirements at the point of registration. Chorister candidates also need to audition. See our Scholarships page for details.

Bursaries

You may also wish to see our Financial Assistance Section for details on how to apply for a bursary at this stage.

Step 4. Entrance Assessments

We may require additional information or assessments, which could include a second interview with another member of our staff. This helps us ensure that we can fully support your child’s needs at Wells Cathedral School.

Little Wellies Nursery

Please see our Little Wellies Nursery page for details on how to apply.

Reception - Year 1

Your child will be invited to attend a taster day, which they need to attend before an offer is made.

Years 2 - 6

Our Admissions Team will make arrangements for a taster day. As part of that, they will have an academic assessment (CAT 4) and a short interview. We will also request references from your child’s current school.

Years 7 - 11

Our Admissions Team will make arrangements for an online academic assessment (CAT 4) and a short interview (available either online or in person). We will also request references from your child’s current school.

For candidates joining us from a prep school, we mark Common Entrance 13+ Examinations on behalf of your child’s current school; however it is not a requirement for entry and all candidates also sit our own assessment tests.

Sixth Form

For Sixth Form entry, we will require predicted grades and will request confirmation of actual grades after results day, to ensure that our published entry requirements are met. Pupils will need satisfactory IGCSE or GCSE results in at least six subjects at grades 9-4 (A* to C) and typically a minimum of grade 7 or 6 (A or B) in the chosen areas of Sixth Form study. Exceptions to this may be made for those following a Specialist Music course.

Step 5. Offer and Acceptance

Once your child has registered, completed the tests, attended an interview and any other steps that need to be taken into account, and we have received a satisfactory reference, you will be sent a formal offer letter and the accompanying contract documents.

When we have received the signed contract and deposit, your child will then have a confirmed place at Wells Cathedral School. Further communications, including joining details, will follow.

If you live overseas, this will be the time that you should start considering visa requirements and appointing a guardian for your child. See our International page for details.
