Eli’s story
Star bassoonist Eli won the School’s concerto competition this summer. Eli is the first person in her family to go to boarding school and, like over 100 other pupils at Wells Cathedral School, she is only able to attend the School with help of financial support.“Playing bassoon wasn’t something that I thought I was going to do with my life, I thought I was going to go to university, become an academic person, work in an office or something, but then there was a moment where it clicked and I thought ‘this is what I want to do’.
Coming to Wells has made me realise that there are people that love music deeply and differently. I’m a complete music nerd and I’ve met other people who are just as excited about their instrument as I am about the bassoon. It makes me so happy to be surrounded by like-minded people and it makes me feel as if I truly belong.
I’m studying A-levels in music, psychology, and maths. I’m applying to three conservatoires and I’m really looking forward to it. I know that wherever I end up will be somewhere I want to be. I’m working as hard as possible so they’ll want me, and we’ll see where we go from there.
I want to experience different musical cultures, different studying styles, meet new people, and potentially join the Berlin Philharmonic. That would be my dream.
I’m really grateful for everything Wells has given me. Without funding I wouldn’t be here, and had I not been here I wouldn’t be immersed in all this music.”
