Year 9 Drama Trip to The Making of Harry Potter
As part of our Drama and Integrated Arts programme, pupils in Year 9 took the opportunity to visit The Making of Harry Potter at Warner Bros Studio in London.
The unique studio tour took pupils behind-the-scenes to explore the magic of the Harry Potter™ films, which showcased the huge array of beautiful sets, costumes and props. It also revealed some closely guarded secrets, including facts about the special effects and animatronics that made these films so hugely popular all over the world.
The real driving force behind this trip was to encourage pupils to reflect on how their skills and talents might be applied to a career in the film industry, by giving them the opportunity to attend a film and media workshop. This enabled them to discover the roles of different film departments and to witness the processes involved in taking a script from the written word, to storyboards, artwork, white card models, and finished sets using authentic items from the Harry Potter film series. It was interesting to see how subjects as diverse as maths, science, art and design are involved in production design alongside screenwriting and directing.
“The British Film Industry is booming”, said one of the teachers, “and you are our next generation of filmmakers.” Just to prove it she promptly shared with us the exciting news that Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian Mckellen, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Rebel Wilson, James Corden and Jason Derulo were filming a stone’s throw away in the studio across the car park!
