Wells Cathedral School Speech Day

Pupils, parents, staff and guests enjoyed a celebratory end to the academic year in glorious Somerset sunshine at the School Speech Day on Friday, the first Speech Day under the leadership of Head Master Alastair Tighe.

Simon Shercliff OBE, Director for National Security at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and an Old Wellensian, was the inspiring speaker at Senior School Prize-Giving, giving a fascinating talk to Senior pupils about the opportunities and experiences around the globe that he has garnered in his role in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Head Master, Alastair Tighe gave the speech at the Junior School Prize-Giving, held in the early afternoon in Cedars Hall. The speech was based on The Wizard of Oz, this year’s fabulous Junior School Production, and focused on the valuable characteristics of brains, heart and courage in forming character.

The Wells Jazz Combo opened proceedings at Senior School Prize-Giving, with a rousing introduction, whilst the Wells Cathedral School Wind Ensemble performed John Williams’ much loved ‘Nimbus 2000’ from Harry Potter.

Following Prize-Giving, the Senior School End of Year Service was held at Wells Cathedral, where The Very Reverend Dr John Davies DL, Dean of Wells Cathedral gave the sermon.

After the Service, an informal, light finger buffet with soft drinks was held in the marquee on Cedars Lawn and around the beautiful School grounds.
