Guitar Day

Classical Guitar Day

Wells Cathedral School enjoyed its first ever Classical Guitar Day in early October when 15 keen young classical guitarists, ranging in ability from beginner up to Grade 8 standard, took part in the musical masterclass. Participants included Wells pupils as well as many young guitarists from around the area.

Tutored by James Rippingale, classical guitar teacher at Wells, and Derbyshire-based composer/guitarist Jonathan Priestley, the day provided a jam-packed schedule of activities, with a primary focus on ensemble playing and inspiring sessions on technique, learning and exam success.

Upper Sixth guitarist, Rosa Bonnin, and Graduate Music Assistant, Jake Adams, assisted the ensembles; whilst double bassist David Hayes also joined the rehearsals and performance.

The day culminated in a joint viola and classical guitar concert in Cedars Hall, with highlights including the guitarists coming together to play Catalan Folk Song, a fiery guitar arrangement of Astor Piazzolla’s Libertango.
