Geology Schools Challenge
Congratulations to the Wells A level Geology Team who have qualified for the National Final of the Geological Society Schools Challenge, after competing against teams in the Western Regional round from Bishop Wordsworth’s School and South Wiltshire Grammar School (combined team) and Cirencester College.
The team was led by Upper Sixth pupil Nicholas Richards and included Ellie Ager, Humphrey Boot, Edward Harris, Megan Taylor and Isaac Wiessler.
This year’s theme in the Western Regional round was The Solar System and Beyond. The Wells team put together a professional presentation and poster about Cryo Tectonics and Cryovolcanism on Jupiter’s moon Europa and gave an excellent performance in the geology quiz round.
Feedback included: “[the judges were] blown away by how professional the presentation was.“; and “It was evident how engaged students are in the subject and their love for learning.“
The competition was hosted by Structural Soils, a geology company that tests samples from major construction works such as Hinkley Point and HS2. Pupils were given a tour around their geological testing laboratories as part of the event.
The Wells team will now go on to represent the Western Region at the final in March next year, which will be held at Burlington House, Piccadilly, the HeadQuarters of the Geological Society.
