BBC Young Musician Finalists

Huge congratulations to three Wells musicians and Old Wellensian Meggie Murphy, who have all been selected for the Category Finals of the BBC Young Musician Competition 2020. With four in the Finals, this year Wells has the highest number of musicians represented from any of the UK’s Music Schools.

Year 11 recorder player Eliza Haskins has reached the last five of the Woodwind musicians and will compete in the Woodwind Category Final, for the second time; Year 11 pianist Bridget Yee and Lower Sixth pianist Sejin Yoon have both reached the Keyboard Category Final; whilst trombonist Meggie Murphy, currently studying in her first year at the Royal Academy of Music, has reached the Brass Category Final. Meggie finished her time at Wells in July following completion of her A levels.

The Category Finals will be held at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff in the second week of March, where musicians will play for a panel of judges and a live audience, and will be filmed for a televised broadcast on BBC4 in May. There will also be coverage on BBC Radio 3.

The winner of each Category Final will go through to the Semi-Final to be held in Cardiff; and from the Semi-Final three young musicians will be asked to play in the Grand Final where the winner will be chosen. The Grand Final will be held at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall in May 2020. There, the finalists will perform with the BBC Philharmonic, playing a concerto which they have chosen.

Good luck to Bridget and Sejin for Sunday’s Keyboard Final; to Eliza for Monday’s Woodwind Final; and to Meggie for Tuesday’s Brass Final.
