Wells Cathedral School Seeks Director of Music
Wells Cathedral School – one of the world’s leading music schools – is today announcing the search for a new Director of Music.
Wells is a completely unique school: not only is it the only one of the UK’s five specialist music schools to offer world-class musical education within an all-round school, but it is also one of the world’s oldest cathedral schools, where young choristers benefit from exceptional musical training and all-round education.
The School enjoys a global reputation, and welcomes the most talented young performers from around the world. In recent years, 100% of conservatoire applicants from Wells have successfully obtained a place (most with scholarships); and in the most recent BBC Young Musician competition, Wells had more category finalists than any other school.
The post of Director of Music has become available following the appointment of the current postholder Mark Stringer as the Founding Deputy Head at the brand new Yehudi Menuhin School in Qingdao, China.
Mark Stringer says:

I have loved every moment of my time here, working with so many wonderful colleagues, and seeing so many remarkably talented and able young people on the specialist music programme here. After almost seven years here, I’m excited to embrace a new challenge in Qingdao, while keeping an eye from afar on developments in Wells, which I am sure will continue to flourish!”
Head Master Alastair Tighe says:
“Under Mark Stringer’s wonderful leadership, music at Wells has gone from strength to strength, and we wish him all the very best for his exciting new adventure in China. I look forward to hearing from some exceptional candidates who will be looking to build on his legacy, and join us during what is – despite the trials and tribulations caused by the pandemic – a period of astonishing success for the School.”
The new Director of Music at Wells will need to be an elite-level musician and educator, with the experience and vision to guide one of the largest music departments anywhere in the world.
