BBC Young Musician Category Finals Strings Brass Violin French Horn 2022 WCS Wells Cathedral Independent School Somerset England

BBC Young Musician 2022 Category Finals

The BBC Young Musician of the Year category finals, featuring violinist Dawid Kasprzak (Lower Sixth) and French Horn player Imogen Moorsom (OW 2022), have been broadcast on BBC Four and are now available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

Dawid, accompanied by Ms Walker, performed in the Strings category final which was shown on Sunday 2nd October. Simon Smith, the School’s Coordinator of Strings Studies, described Dawid’s journey to this impressive stage: “Since his arrival at Wells in Year 9 Dawid has been an exemplary pupil. He has worked incredibly hard under the guidance of his teacher Catherine Lord to develop a spectacular technique and extraordinary musicianship, and it was a delight to hear this being showcased again in the BBC Young Musician competition. He is a fantastic example and inspiration to the rest of the talented String players at Wells.”

Imogen, accompanied by Mr Lauener during the Brass category final, had her performance shown on Tuesday 4th October. Simon de Souza, Imogen’s Horn teacher, recounted her success as a pupil at Wells: “In almost forty years teaching at Wells I’ve been privileged to teach many exceptional students and Imogen stands comparison with any of them! It’s been a delight to teach her and to see her blossom into the mature and virtuosic performer we saw on the Young Musician of the Year stage. Having made the most of the opportunities available to her at Wells I don’t doubt that she will do the same as she moves into the next stage of her studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, a route in which she follows many previous Wells hornists. She should be as proud of herself as we are of her.”

Alex Laing, Director of Music, had high praise for Dawid and Imogen, remarking that; “We are so proud of these two exceptional young musicians who are both not only wonderful players but also super people. They both inspire the next generation of pupils and the staff at Wells with their skills and also with their joy and creativity through music.”

If you’d like to see our young musicians compete against the top instrumentalists in the country, you can watch Dawid’s performance here and Imogen’s performance here.

Congratulations to them both on this huge achievement.
