Free and Equal Conference WCS Wells Cathedral Independent School Somerset England

Free and Equal Conference

Lower Sixth pupils studying Philosophy, Ethics and Developments in Christian Thought attended the Free and Equal Conference at Lytchett Minster School to listen to a range of speakers presenting on topics such as consent, domestic abuse, feminism and freedoms for women to do anything they want in life. Part of the Sixth Formers’ course is to study ethical approaches to how we should treat each other, and the way in which Christian culture has regarded women throughout time.

Mr Poxon, Head of Religion, Philosophy and Ethics, explained; “We try to bring all of that teaching to bear on current day issues and 21st Century attitudes and behaviours. The talks at this national conference challenged, provoked and engaged the pupils to think about these issues in a way that is culturally relevant and appropriate, whilst looking at the common stereotypes and underlying biases that are unseen and inherent in 21st Century UK.

Pupils in attendance were asked to reflect about gender equality in their own schools, and what could be done to enhance it.
