Cory Brass Band Workshop
On Saturday 12th November, members of The Cory Band, European Brass Champions 2022, were joined by over 50 young Brass players from 29 different schools for a free side-by-side playing workshop in Cedars Hall.
Led by their inspirational conductor Philip Harper, the players worked on several pieces for Brass Band, including African Funk & Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You, and after a visit to the Prozone Music stand to check out the latest in Brass instruments, the afternoon culminated in an informal performance to family and friends. Later that day six Wells Cathedral School Brass ensembles entertained a packed foyer of concert goers before the evening concert given by the full force of The Cory Band, which was entertaining, inspiring and thrilling in equal measure!
Ross Brown, the School’s Co-ordinator of Brass Studies, said: “It was such a thrill to see and hear so many young Brass players from schools around the country sharing their passion for music together in Cedars Hall, under the inspirational guidance of one of the top Brass Band conductors in the world, Philip Harper, and alongside these fabulous players from Cory. I’m very grateful to Lyndon Chapman and Besson Instruments for their financial support which allowed us to offer this opportunity free of charge.”
One attendee wrote in to the Cory Band to express how much he’d enjoyed the day; “I really enjoyed it and have learned lots. Thank you. Afterwards, we watched your concert and it was breathtaking! I particularly loved Thunderbirds, Walk Like and Egyptian and the trombone solo was incredible. I hope I will eventually be able to play like that. My mum said it was one of the best concerts she has ever been to and I agree. She loved the Saturn Rings and in the concert I was in, she said African Funk was her absolute favourite (I also loved playing that piece). Good luck in your next competition. Thanks again for a great day. I am going to listen to your Jungle Book album when I go to sleep now.“
