Devotional performance of Duruflé's Requiem by Wells Cathedral School Choristers in Somerset England

Devotional performance of Duruflé’s Requiem

On Sunday 26th February, with a packed Nave demonstrating our solidarity with the people of Ukraine, the Cathedral Choir sang a moving devotional performance of Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem, conducted by the Acting Director of Music at Wells Cathedral, Alexander Hamilton, to mark one year since the start of the war.

The Choir and organist Adam Wilson, Wells Cathedral’s Acting Assistant Director of Music, were joined by guests mezzo-soprano soloist Marta Fontanals-Simmons, Vicars’ Choral baritone soloist William Drakettt and cellist Rania Dereka (Lower Sixth).

Alexander Hamilton wrote “Duruflé’s Requiem. . . is imbued with a pervading sense of rest and tranquility. It is music that offers to the listener a deep and powerful sense of enduring hope, and the assurance that, in spite of the darkness that clouds our troubled world, there is light that cannot be extinguished.”
