UK Senior Mathematics Challenge WCS Wells Cathedral School Independent Prep Somerset England

UK Senior Mathematics Challenge

On Tuesday 3rd October 35 pupils from Years 11 and the Sixth Form took part in this year’s Senior Mathematical Challenge, run by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT).

The Challenge takes the form of a 90-minute, multiple-choice paper that encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems that are designed to make pupils think. The top-scoring participants are awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates in the ratio 3:2:1.

This year Wells pupils achieved four Gold, nine Silver and 15 Bronze awards.

Gold Certificates were awarded to Chris Chan (Lower Sixth), who achieved the highest score in the School, Nathan Lam (Year 11), Kenyon Chow (Lower Sixth) and Sean Foong (Upper Sixth).

Silver Certificates were awarded to Joshua Knott, Adelaide Krech and Horus Chan (Year 11), Toby Dudley, Elizabeth Massey and Hana Wong (Lower Sixth), Yannick Fiss, Myron Ong and Roberto Sestini (Upper Sixth).

Bronze Certificates were awarded to Freddie Tuke, Alfie Carey, Mike Gillbanks, Eleanor Atkins, Alvan Wong, Larisa Li and Michael Turner (Year 11), Ian Leung, Barty Hawkins, Freddie Hopper, Samuel Webster and Kingston Leung (Lower Sixth), Eva Donoghue, Bonnie Liu and Ayden Sidique (Upper Sixth).

The UKMT invite around 1,000 of the very highest performers to then take part in the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1, which is an entry point to the training and selection programme for international competitions, and around 6,000 to take part in the Senior Kangaroo Competition. Four of our pupils have been invited to take part in the follow-on Senior Kangaroo round this year.
