Hill performs solo recital in Glastonbury
An enthusiastic crowd gathered at St John’s Church in Glastonbury on Thursday 25th April to hear Hill (Upper Sixth), a young up and coming classical guitarist, performing a lunchtime recital. At only 17 years old, Wells specialist Hill is already attracting guitar aficionados and enthusiasts to his audiences due to his well honed technique and deeply expressive and musical playing.
The concert opened with Tarrega’s classic Lagrima followed by a sparkling and energetic Rondo by Carulli. Hill then played Villa Lobos’s cello like Prelude no. 1 with great expression followed by Manuel Barrueco’s majestic arrangement of the Prelude from Bach’s Cello first Suite. The concert ended with two of Barrios’ most famous works, the lyrical Julia Florida and the fiendishly virtuosic La Cathedral. The audience was left enthralled, enchanted and wanting more.
Hill will continue his musical education at The Royal College of Music in September. In his programme notes he stated that he wants to use his career to promote the classical guitar and to inspire others. His teacher, Mr Rippingale, commented, “I think all present would agree that he is off to a great start!”
