Out of this World Symphony Orchestra Concert
What a way to end the musical year at Wells. Out of this World lived up to its billing: it was music making on another level.
Guided beautifully by Tess Jackson, the young conductor recently chosen as one to watch and a Classic FM rising star, the Symphony Orchestra performed works by Aaron Copland, Huw Watkins and Gustav Holst in a full Wells Cathedral. The Brass and Percussion sound reverberated around the building in Copland’s iconic Fanfare for the Common Man before Lily (Lower Sixth) astounded us all with a stunning performance of Huw Watkins’ Flute Concerto. Lily found wonderful colours and characters throughout, and the Orchestra accompanied with skill, energy and sensitivity. The Planets Suite by Holst had it all: soaring string melodies; Woodwind, Brass and String solos of the highest quality; and bags of character. Mars was incredible with its relentless rhythm of war, Mercury danced, Jupiter partied and at the end of Neptune, the sound of the Choir departing into space seemed a fitting send off for our musicians and especially the Upper Sixth leavers for whom this was their final performance as members of this wonderful School.
Congratulations to all on this fabulous concert!
