Ben Sparks visit WCS Wells Cathedral School Independent Prep Somerset England

Ben Sparks visit

On Monday 25th November, we were privileged to welcome Ben Sparks to Wells for the second year running to deliver two talks to specialist and further mathematicians.

Ben is a mathematician and musician who gives maths talks and workshops around the world. Following a decade of teaching Maths at secondary schools across England, Ben is now based at the University of Bath; he works with the Advanced Maths Support Programme (AMSP), the Numberphile YouTube channel (accumulating over 16 million views!) and runs his own YouTube channel: SparksMaths.

His talk ‘Bank or Bust’, based on the game ‘Pass the Pig’, was delivered to 35 pupils in Years 7 to 9 and gave valuable insight into when to bank points in order to win. This was followed by a talk on ‘Sacred Geometry of Chance’ to 50 pupils in Years 10 to the Upper Sixth that afternoon.

Our mathematicians thoroughly enjoyed his talks and might have some Mathematics to apply to the family games over Christmas! We thank Ben hugely for coming back to Wells and we look forward to hearing more from him in the future.
