Community Music Project’s celebratory day
Our Community Music Project has been a weekly combination of creativity and collaboration with St Joseph’s and St Teresa’s Catholic Primary School and our Prep School.
Jayne Obradovic, Head of Percussion, describes how, “each session has offered something unique and has inspired the children to participate in a wide range of skills. The best part has been seeing the children develop in confidence and growing not just as musicians but as a community! Each week we have seen new faces, some eager to share their knowledge, some a little unsure, however on collaboration day at Wells the gathering together was something special. We hoped to foster an environment of learning and growth through body percussion, dance, samba and basic rhythmical recall. The children discovered their own voices, creating rhythmical compositions and even making their own instruments at home. Our Sixth Formers created their own compositions and led sessions with confidence. It has been amazing to see how they have also grown and now have the ability to share their own talent in a supportive environment. This project has been so much more than a music project – it has been a powerful reminder of the incredible things that can happen when young people and teachers come together. Described by Steve Reich as “one of the greatest musicians in the world today” we were delighted to share our project on Friday 22nd November alongside the incredible Colin Currie and his quartet, adding their inspiration and passion for education.”
After the visit, which was led by superb percussionist and educator Owen Gunnell, Colin commented: “My quartet enjoyed a very productive and inspiring residency at Wells, where it was once again very encouraging to hear the very fine level of musical skill and to collaborate closely with the students in our joint performance. I look forward to returning soon to the School!”
We thank our Sixth Formers who were so open, warm and friendly with the visiting pupils. There was a real sense of inspiring and mentoring the next generation as they led by example – it was a joy to see.
