St Nicholas Day: reverse giving initiative for Years 7, 8, and 9
On 6th December, many European countries celebrate St Nicholas Day. ‘Saint Nick’ is renowned for his generosity, having given away all of his wealth and possessions to support those in need.
This year, the Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Department chose to commemorate the day by promoting the concept of ‘reverse giving’ within our community. In previous years, our School has successfully collected items for local charitable causes, such as the Wells Foodbank, Connect Centre, and Animal Rescue. This year pupils were invited to ‘donate’ their time instead of material items. The initiative was primarily aimed at pupils in Years 7, 8, and 9, but participation was open to anyone who wished to get involved. It encouraged pupils to volunteer their time and effort to make a positive difference in their homes, school, or local communities. Pupils were invited to step outside their daily routines and engage in meaningful acts of kindness or service.
We were proud to see pupils clear leaves from their elderly neighbours’ garden, help their parents with extra household chores, bake for their family, shop for their grandparents, clean out their chickens, help their local community with gardening and much more! Mrs Alabiso’s tutor group even volunteered to litter pick around the School, and some Year 9 girls volunteered to help with the lunch queue. Well done to everyone who took part.
